How roofers get recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI
After a storm, homeowners ask AI who's trustworthy, not just who's close. Roofing is a trust sale, and AI answers reflect that. This guide shows what those AI tools look for, and 8 fixes you can do yourself this week for free.
What your customers ask AI
These are the kinds of questions people type into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI before they call a roofer. Under each one: what the AI has to find before it can name you.
“Best roofing company in your town that isn't a storm chaser?”
To name you, it needs: Years in business, a local address and lots of local reviews spread over time, not all from one month.
“Who does roof inspections for insurance claims in your town?”
To name you, it needs: A page that explains how you help with insurance claims, step by step.
“Roofer near me for a leak repair, not a full replacement?”
To name you, it needs: Repairs listed as a service you do, with a line on small jobs.
“Who installs metal roofs in your town?”
To name you, it needs: A metal roofing page with the systems you install and the towns you cover.
“Is a GAF certified roofer worth it?”
To name you, it needs: Manufacturer certifications written in text, with what they mean for the warranty.
“How much does a new roof cost in your town?”
To name you, it needs: An honest price range page. AI quotes businesses that answer the money question.
What AI tools read before they name a roofer
The AI companies don't publish their rules. These are the signals we see again and again in the sources the AI answers quote.
- Reviews, and your replies. How many, how recent, and what they say. Reviews that name the job and the town give the AI words to match.
- The same details everywhere. Your name, address, phone and hours should match on Google, Yelp, BBB, Angi and the rest. Mismatches look unreliable.
- A website that says it plainly. One page per service, the towns you cover by name, prices or how you price, and your license in text.
- Business facts code. A small block of code that tells machines your trade, towns, hours and phone. AI crawlers don't run JavaScript, so it has to be in the page itself.
- Being named by others. Local “best roofers in town” lists, news stories, suppliers and associations. AI answers often quote these lists.
8 free fixes for roofers, this week
- Put your years in business, local address and license or registration (where your state has one) on your site in text.
- Write a plain page on how you handle insurance claims. It's one of the most asked roofing questions.
- Make pages for replacement, repair, inspections, metal, and gutters if you do them. Name the towns on each.
- Publish an honest price range page, with what changes the price. Owners fear it; homeowners and AI love it.
- Ask every customer for a review, and ask them to mention the roof type and their town.
- Reply to every review. On a bad one, stay calm and say how you'll make it right. Shoppers read replies.
- Match your name, address and phone exactly on Google, BBB, Yelp, Angi and Nextdoor. BBB matters more for roofers.
- Add business facts code to your homepage (free generator below).

Mistakes we see on roofer websites
All reviews from one storm season.
A burst of reviews then silence can look like a storm chaser. Ask steadily, all year.
Certifications as badges only.
"GAF Master Elite" in an image is invisible to AI. Write it out and link to the maker's page.
No physical address shown.
Roofing has a trust problem with out-of-town crews. A real local address helps both people and AI.
Gallery with no words.
Photos with no captions don't help. Caption each one: roof type, town, month.
Questions roofers ask us
Do people really ask AI to pick a roofer?
Yes, especially after storms and for big replacements. They ask which roofers are trustworthy and the AI names a few. The Free AI Check shows whether you're one of them today.
We get most work from insurance and door knocking. Does this matter?
Homeowners often check a roofer on AI or Google after the knock. If the AI names someone else as the trusted local pick, that's a lost signature.
Can I buy a spot in ChatGPT's answer?
No. AI tools don't sell recommendation slots today. You earn it with reviews, clear pages and matching details.
What's the fastest fix?
Usually your listings: matching name, address and phone everywhere, and a complete Google profile. Then a steady review habit.

The Free AI Check asks the questions your customers ask, in your town, and shows who gets named. You also get a list of what to fix, in plain words.
We never promise what an AI tool will say. Nobody honest can.
