How plumbers get recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI

A burst pipe at 11 pm is a phone call, not a research project. Whoever the AI names first usually gets it. This guide shows what those AI tools look for, and 8 fixes you can do yourself this week for free.

What your customers ask AI

These are the kinds of questions people type into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI before they call a plumber. Under each one: what the AI has to find before it can name you.

  • “Who's a good emergency plumber near me open right now?”

To name you, it needs: Your real hours (or 24/7) in the same words on Google, your site and your business facts code.

  • “Best plumber in your town for a water heater replacement?”

To name you, it needs: A page about water heaters that names the brands you install and the towns you cover.

  • “Who can clear a main sewer line clog this weekend?”

To name you, it needs: Weekend hours listed, and reviews that mention sewer or drain jobs.

  • “Is there a plumber in your town with upfront pricing?”

To name you, it needs: A clear line on your site about how you quote (flat rate, free estimate, trip fee).

  • “Who does tankless water heater installs in your town?”

To name you, it needs: The word tankless on your site, ideally on its own page, plus a review or two that says it.

  • “Licensed plumber who does repiping in older homes?”

To name you, it needs: Your license number on your site and the service named plainly.

What AI tools read before they name a plumber

The AI companies don't publish their rules. These are the signals we see again and again in the sources the AI answers quote.

  1. Reviews, and your replies. How many, how recent, and what they say. Reviews that name the job and the town give the AI words to match.
  2. The same details everywhere. Your name, address, phone and hours should match on Google, Yelp, BBB, Angi and the rest. Mismatches look unreliable.
  3. A website that says it plainly. One page per service, the towns you cover by name, prices or how you price, and your license in text.
  4. Business facts code. A small block of code that tells machines your trade, towns, hours and phone. AI crawlers don't run JavaScript, so it has to be in the page itself.
  5. Being named by others. Local “best plumbers in town” lists, news stories, suppliers and associations. AI answers often quote these lists.

8 free fixes for plumbers, this week

  • Put your license number in your website footer and on your Google profile description.
  • Make one page per money job: water heaters, drains and sewer, leak repair, repiping. Name the towns on each.
  • If you really answer 24/7, say it the same way everywhere. If you don't, list real hours. AI repeats what it reads.
  • Ask every customer for a review the day the job is done, and ask them to mention the job ("water heater", "slab leak").
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, within a few days. Mention the job and the town in your reply.
  • Check that your business name, address and phone match exactly on Google, Yelp, BBB, Angi and Nextdoor.
  • Add a short FAQ to your site: trip fee, how fast you come, do you work on weekends, what brands you install.
  • Add business facts code to your homepage (our free generator below writes it for you).

Two free tools help with this list: the review link and QR card maker and the business facts code maker.

Mistakes we see on plumber websites

Your phone number is only in an image.

AI tools read text. A number inside a picture or a banner graphic is invisible to them.

One page called "Services" with a list.

A single bullet list doesn't tell AI you're the water heater person in your town. Separate pages do.

"Serving the greater metro area."

AI matches towns by name. List the actual towns and neighborhoods you drive to.

Old hours on one listing.

If Yelp says you close at 5 and Google says 24/7, AI may skip you as unreliable.

Questions plumbers ask us

Do plumbers really get customers from ChatGPT?

People now ask AI tools who to call, the same way they used to search Google. When they ask for a plumber in a town, the AI names a few businesses. Being one of those names is a new way to get the call. Run the Free AI Check to see if you're named today.

I already rank on Google Maps. Isn't that enough?

It helps a lot, because Google's own AI leans on your Google profile. But ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini also read review sites, local lists and your website. You can be top 3 on Maps and still missing from ChatGPT.

Can I pay to be recommended?

No. None of the AI tools sell recommendation slots today. What you can do is make your business easy for them to find, read and trust. Anyone who promises a guaranteed spot is guessing.

How long does it take?

Fixes to your site and listings can show up within weeks. Reviews build over months. We re-check the same questions every month, so you can see what moved.
